Resetter for Epson Printer - Great little gadget

This new chip resetter will do all the Epson DESKTOP printers, including the new R1800 and R2400. Here is a list of the Epson printers it will reset...

The nice thing about the resetter is that it has feedback and replaceable batteries. When a reset is successful, the green LED will flash. The batteries (3) are good for thousands of resets and they are easily replaced.

The chips are reset without changing the Epson identification on the chip. The printers can not detect that an external chip resetter was used. There is no limit to the number of times a chip can be reset.

Troubleshooting Tips:
When you are attempting to do a reset, if the Green LED does not flash, this is an indication that the chip you are trying to reset is either corrupted or damaged. The flashing of the LED is feedback to you that a reset of the chip was successful.

If you hear a rattle inside this resetter, this means the batteries have come loose. The unit will not work with the batteries loose. Take it apart and reinstall the batteries.

How to choose a printer

Finding the right printer for yourself can be confusing. There’s so many to choose from, they’re such a big range of prices, so what should I consider???

Firstly, the price. The purchase price is the least of it all. What a printer ‘costs’ is, over time, mainly what it’s going to cost you for replacement ink cartridges. You need to figure out how much you can spend on a printer right now, because you want the ‘best’ you can afford to buy, and from the available printers around that price range you need to choose the one which is going to have affordable running costs.

Secondly, ink cartridges. This is the main ‘cost’ of your printer. ‘Good’ printers have separate cartridges for each colour. If the replacement cartridge includes all the colours in the one unit, and you run out of one colour, then you’re faced with the prospect of either continuing to print funny looking pictures or buying a more expensive ‘all-in-one’ cartridge when you had plenty of ink left for the other colours!

This prospect is the main reason that most of the ‘ultra-cheap’ $80 and less printers are really not very good purchases. They’ll almost inevitably have an ‘all-in-one’ ink cartridge, or at best a black and a colour cartridge. (I feel rather ‘ripped off’ when I have to replace 3 colours just because one ran out!)

Thirdly, what are you using the printer for?? Don’t look at a printer and think “This must be good because it has all these wonderful features.” Decide base on exactly what YOU need to use it for. Do you need to print lots of documents? Is printing speed an important consideration for you? Are you going to be printing photographs? Do you need a fax functions? Is a Scanner require? If so are you going to need to print them directly from the camera or the camera’s memory card?

Compatible or Genuine Ink Cartridges? How to decide

What is the difference between Manufactureres original and compatible or third party inks? and more importantly which is the best?

When you start looking at the costs of ink cartridges the immediate thing that jumps out is the price differential between original and compatible or refilled cartridges. The second most asked what is the difference between the expensive manufacturer’s originals and the compatible/refilled ones. Or the other way we are asked that question is ‘are the compatibles as good as the originals?’ Let’s answer both questions here and now. The manufacturers original ink cartridges in the printers they have been designed for and using the manufacturers own brand paper are unbeatable – the output you will get from any of the major printer manufacturers is quite simply breathtaking, and the cost of printing with them can also generate a pretty sharp intake of breath.

For the average user the compatibles are adequate. We actually test all of the cartridges that we offer for sale and are willing to guarantee the quality of the output and the life of the cartridges. We have a standard high resolution picture which we print onto 125GSM photo gloss paper and print using the originals and using the compatibles. Our results are then stuck onto our wall to test for fading over a period of time. The definitive answer to the question ‘are they as good as the originals’ is NO, but based on a price/performance ratio they are more than adequate, and some might even be tempted to say that they are very good.

Finally bear in mind that the manufacturers originals will not block your print heads or cause streaking (some compatibles will do both), but if the compatibles are causing problems run a set of originals through the printer which will clean and lubricate your print heads, then switch back to compats – thus giving you a reasonable cost of printing. If you base your cost of printing on one set of originals to three of compats then it should be a bearable cost to ensure good quality output.

One final thing, what is the difference between compatibles and refilled/remanufactured?. The answer is quite simple although the technology behind both types of printers is very complex. Epson, Canon and Brother all produce a printer with a built in print head, so when you replace the cartridge all you are changing is an ink tank. Nowadays these printers all use individual ink tanks for the different colour inks (up to 10 different cartridges in some top end printers) which means that when one colour runs out you simple replace the empty cartridge.

HP, Lexmark, Dell (printers are actually manufactured by Lexmark for Dell), Philips and Olivetti all produce a cartridge which has the print head integrated into the cartridge. So every time you change a cartridge you install a new print head. These cartridges are intrinsically expensive because of the unbelievably complex technology that every single one has built in. These are the cartridges that are worth re-cycling because the print heads can be used several times without degradation of quality.

Compatible ink tanks are brand new, but manufactured by third party manufacturers – who have nothing to do with the original printer manufacturers, refilled cartridges have been used once, and recycled and refilled with third party ink. So you can get compatible ink tanks for the Epson, Canon and Brother printers, but only refilled or remanufactured cartridges for HP, Lexmark, Dell etc.

If you look at an HP Cartridge you can see immediately that it is not going to degrade and decay in our landfill sites very quickly, in fact it is estimated that it will take 10,000 years for them to decay so cartridge recycling is a big thing, but you have to be aware that the only cartridges that are currently worth the expense of refilling are the ones with the integrated print heads i.e. the HP/Lexmark/Dell types. The Epson/Canon/Brother cartridges are simply ink tanks and are not generally recyclable.

So my final answer in this debate is that the compatibles are generally fit for purpose. If you are printing general office/home documents then save your money and use the compatibles. Run a set of originals through occasionally to keep you print heads in good condition and you should have a cost effective and good quality printing experience

Remaufactured Toner Cartridge, are they any good?

Single re-use remanufacturers (so called ‘drill and fill’ merchants) are cheating you and the environment. Professional remanufacturers replace every worn or damaged component in the cartridges. Imaging Drums (OPC Drums) should be cleaned, tested or more usually replaced. The OPC Drum is the most expensive part of many toner cartridges, but is crtical for the quality performance of your cartridge. The majority of remanufactured cartridges stocked at 123inkjets.com.au have Brand New OPC drums, Charge rollers and other mechanical parts. Microchips must also be replaced to restore the full functionality and compatibility of the cartridge .
Third Party Toner is not as good as the OEM’s NO!!!

Since the advent of Chemical Toner about 7 years ago, almost all of the major OEM’s are shipping printer cartridges using this new technology. About 18 months ago, this toner became available for the Remanufacturers and I would say that the quality of both colour and greyscale achieved by the Remanufactuers is equivalent to the quality that the OEM’s achieve.
Remanufacturers reuse Toner in their cartridges

No Way, if they did the none of the cartridges would work. Toner becomes contaminated during the printing process by paper dust and electrical charges redering it unusable. Every different Manufacturers cartridge model also requires different toner formulation. Combining contaminated toners would compound problems.
Defective Toner cartridges damage printers

Toner Cartridges are largely self contained and make limited contact with the rest of the printer. The worst that can happen is that toner from a failed cartridge must be removed from the printer. All cartridges deposit some toner inside the printer, and many of the new printers have a waste toner box to collect this. Properly remanufactured cartridges do not damage printers or create more wear than cartridges that are properly assembled by or for printer makers. Removing toner deposits is often part of routine maintenance for the printer.

Remanufactured Cartridges are inferior to Manufacturers Originals
